Error Handling for Bundled Updates PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 2
Written by Amit khari
Wednesday, 03 October 2007

Runtime errors can occur during execution of bundled updates. How are they handled? In general, COMMIT WORK processing occurs in the following order:

...

1. All dialog-task FORM routines logged with PERFORM ON COMMIT are executed.

2. All high-priority (V1) update-task function modules are executed.

The end of V1-update processing marks the end of the change transaction. If you used COMMIT WORK AND WAIT to trigger commit processing, control returns to the dialog-task program.

3. All low-priority (V2) update-task function modules are triggered.
All background-task function modules are triggered.

Runtime errors can occur either in the system itself, or because your program issues an termination message (MESSAGE type ‘A’). Also, the ROLLBACK WORK statement automatically signals a runtime error. The system handles errors according to where they occur:

Ever needed to kick off a job from another external system? This tip shows you how to kick off an event. A background job is then created in SM36 that waits for this event to occur. Scheduling this job as a periodic job will cause this job to be kicked off each time this event happens. It has the ability to send in a parameter which allows you to configure the ABAP of the job to react differently based on the event parameter. Use SM62 to create the user defined event.

If you have a situation where reports need to be send to multiple printers, you can configure a pool device type. A pool device type contain a list of SAP printers which the reports will be directed to.

Do this in transaction code SPAD for spool administration.

For example, in SPAD, type ZXXX next to the field 'Output devices',

  • Click the button Output devices.
  • In change mode, click the Create button.
  • Specify the Device type of your printer.
  • Click the tabstrips 'HostSpoolAccMethod'.
  • In the field "Host spool access method" set to "P: Device Pool".
  • Click the tabstrips 'DevicePool'
  • Click the options "Send to all devices in pool".
  • Type in the list of the SAP printers device you want the report to go to in this pool under the section 'Pool Device List'.
  • Now, when the users send a print to the new device for e.g. ZXXX, it will print to all the spool device you have specify.

There are a number of jobs that should be scheduled to run on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. You can run the jobs manually first, and devide how often they should run for the particular system, and then schedule them to run automatically. These jobs delete obsolete files such as print logs, job logs, and ABAP dumps.

  • RSBTCDEL: Deletes old batch jobs (sugg. older than 30 days)
  • RSPO0041: Deletes old print jobs (sugg. older than 7 days)
  • RSBDCREO: Reorganizes batch sessions and logs (sugg. older than 7 days)
  • RSSNAPDL: Deletes short dumps (sugg. default values)
  • RSBPSTDE: Deletes old job statistics (sugg. older than 30 days)
  • RSCOLL00: Statistics collector for performance monitor (this actually is not a cleanup job, but it should be scheduled hourly).

Additionally, there are some cleanup jobs that should be executed manually on a regular basis (usually once a month). These include:

  • sqldba: Use the Show/Cleanup commands.
  • tp: Use the check all and clearold all commands. Make sure to backup the transport directory first.
  • TemSe (temporary seuential data) database check: Transaction SP12. Execute the menu command TemSe database->Consistency Check and delete inconsistent data.
