Answers The SAP GUI for HTML refers to the SAP Internet Transaction Server (ITS) 4.6DC4 or higher on the server side together with a Web browser at the desktop. With the SAP GUI for HTML most business functions of SAP applications can be accessed. The SAP GUI for HTML is independent of a specific R/3 release. The ITS, and thus the SAP GUI for HTML, is part of the mySAP.com Workplace and other mySAP.com components. The SAP GUI for HTML requires no additional software on the desktop besides a Web browser. SAP GUI for HTML | For casual and occasional users not using very Windows-oriented applications and for situations when a zero administration client is necessary or desirable. | SAP GUI for Windows | When the full scope of functionality in SAP applications is needed and when a user is a frequent and constant user of SAP system. |
The scope of the SAP GUI for HTML is restricted by the inherent limitations of HTML and Web browsers. Although you can map most screen elements used on R/3 screens to HTML, controls with very Windows-oriented features cannot be implemented. See OSS note 0314568 for more information on recent limitations of SAP GUI for HTML. To run the SAP GUI for HTML on base of ITS 4.6DC4 or higher, Please have a look at SAP note 325616 for all latest details on ITS technical requirements. Currently, SAP GUI for HTML supports all release down to R/3 3.1I. Releases below R/3 3.1I are not supported anymore. Please check the ITS Platform Matrix in Media Library -> Literature or under supported platforms under product information. We already support SAP GUI for HTML on Netscape version 6.2 for Windows 32 Bit Platform. Please check SAP note 325616 for more details. We are currently investigating the possibility that in the future SAP GUI for HTML Client will be supported on more browsers and additional Operation Systems. Currently limitations exist in some of the present browsers that must be addressed before support is possible. please consult the ITS development for this issue. To improve transmission speed, it makes sense to compress the data sent by the SAP GUI for HTML server. This is easy to achieve since the latest versions of typical Web browsers (such as MS IE 4.0 or higher, and Netscape Communicator 6.2) support decompression and display of compressed text/html transmission. Since the ITS (AGate) uses gzip compression, it examines HTTP request headers for the "accepts-encoding" field to verify that the Web browser supports gzip. This HTTP compression feature is available with ITS 4.6D. With ITS 4.6D C4 and 6.10 it has been optimized and improved tremendously. The recommended hardware minimum for a SAP GUI for HTML server is a Pentium II 200 MHz system with 128 MB of RAM and 2 GB of drive space. Please check the ITS Platform Matrix in Media Library -> Literature or under supported platforms under product information. The SAP GUI for HTML is one of two models (the other is Web Transactions) for implementing SAP Internet applications that allow users to run R/3 dialog transactions directly from a Web browser. Both models are driven by the SAP Internet Transaction Server (ITS), but their approach to implementation is different: This model allows you to convert R/3 transactions to Internet Application Components (IACs) by creating the services, HTML templates (one per R/3 transaction screen), and other ITS files yourself. To implement IACs using this model, you have to map each R/3 screen element to HTML manually. For this reason, you need some knowledge of HTML, HTMLBusiness, and, because of the demand for highly interactive HTML pages, scripting languages such as JavaScript. To create services and HTML templates, you also need to know how to use the SAP@Web Studio. This model automatically maps the screen elements in R/3 transactions to HTML, using HTMLBusiness functions inside the ITS. Each of these HTML Business functions handles a different screen element, and uses the screen attributes to position HTML controls at the same position on the HTML page as on the R/3 screen. To implement Internet applications using this model, you need little or no knowledge of HTML, HTMLBusiness, or JavaScript. Also, you do not have to be familiar with the SAP@Web Studio, because the SAP GUI for HTML generates the required templates automatically. SAP GUI for HTML was released with ITS 4.6B which reached general availability in December 1999. As of January 2002 SAP only supports ITS 4.6D C4 or higher so SAP recommends that you use always the most recent versions of ITS, which is 6.10 today. There are three options to get the SAP GUI for HTML. 1. The ITS with SAP GUI for HTML is available for download from the SAP Service Marketplace Web site at http://service.sap.com/patches Path: SAP R/3 -> R/3 release => Binary patches => ITS release. 2. It can also be found on the Server Components CD's shipped to all registered and supported SAP customers and the Complete Installation CD can be downloaded from http://service.sap.com/swcenter-inst. Path: SAP-ITS 3. Furthermore, it is available as part of the mysap.com Workplace and other SAP product ( EBP, ESS, CRM and so on etc). Please note that the only ITS versions which are still supported are 4.6DC4 and higher. You do not need to purchase the Workplace to get the SAP GUI for HTML, it will be available as part of your 4.6D (or higher) upgrade CD's and available for download from the Web site at http://service.sap.com/patches. and http://service.sap.com/swcenter-inst But be aware that you will not get the role based menu that is part of the Workplace unless Workplace licenses are also purchased. You will also not be able to make use of other features included in Workplace such as transaction classification. No, SAP GUI for HTML is part of the Workplace and is also included as part of your 4.6D upgrade kit. The SAP GUI for HTML like all SAP GUI's is FREE, it is included as part of your standard R/3 basis components. The users who use SAP GUI for HTML are standard named users in R/3 or could also be Workplace users. Please read the SAP GUI for HTML documentation for a detailed tour of how the ITS dynamically creates HTML out of the R/3 screens. The SAP GUI for HTML will be constantly enhanced in the future as it becomes one of the primary GUI's for accessing SAP systems ( For Ex. SAP GUI for HTML will be the standard GUI for the R/3 Enterprise Release 4.7 with powerful feature such as Accessibility, Usability, closer functionality as Windows GUI and support of GUI XT etc. Nearly all of the mysap.com systems are using the SAP GUI for HTML and ITS as part of their primary user interfaces. Possible future work may involve support for more browsers and more operating systems( Check the Platforms Matrix). We are also investigating technologies to enhance communications between the SAP GUI for HTML server and the browser.
